"Lighthouse" Online Buzz

Online Buzz
Most people are pretty impressed with this episode. After last week's new high water mark, fans were worried this episode would feel like another 'filler' with few questions answered. But I've read a lot of positive feedback about it. Unfortunately there is a bit of rage toward Jack for smashing all those mirrors. Not only did he keep Hurley from seeing his house, he kept us from seeing all the possible reflections!

Details and Easter Eggs
In Christian's office, Jack's mother was searching through some files. One of the files, a yellow one, had some Arabic writing. It reads Ya'qub 672. Ya'qub is the Arabic version of the name Jacob. (Sorry the writing isn't visible in this picture, it is the best picture I could find. But if you have a high-def TV you can check it out for yourself.)

Remember Dogen's Japanese response to Hurley's statement that he was a candidate and could do whatever he wanted? Hurley asked Jacob what Dogen had said but Jacob only replied "You don't want to know." That may be ok for Hurley but we want to know. Here's the translation: "You are lucky you are protected because if you were not I would cut your head off."

There were several posters on the walls in David's room. One of them was for a real Swedish band named "Meat Coat." The poster had a concert date listed, December 19. That is an anniversary of The Purge. (When Ben and the Others gassed everyone in Dharmaville.)

There is an interesting coincidence that Jack's number on Jacob's dial is 23. In the Bible, Psalm 23 is written by David.

Jack seemed to be under the impression that his son is a Boston Red Sox fan. He told his son he installed cable in the bedroom so David could watch the Sox. But in the picture in David real room (at his mother's) he is wearing a LA Dodgers hat. This is possibly another hint at how out of touch Jack is with David.

Before entering the room of the auditions, Jack passed a sign in the hallway. It had details about the audition and the words "Welcome All Candidates!" What a coincidence.

The piano piece David played for his audition was Chopin's "Fantasia Impromptu in C-sharp minor." It was the same song young Daniel Faraday was playing the day his mother came in an told him he couldn't waste anymore time on the piano.

I didn't really understand why Jack got so mad at Hurley when Jacob wouldn't appear. But it made more since when someone told me he probably was expecting Jacob to be his father, Christian. He saw Christian on the island in Season 1. Off the island, Locke had told him his father said 'hello.' Then he even came across Christian's empty coffin on his way to the lighthouse. Even though Hurley called him 'Jacob' Jack probably thought he would finally come face to face with Christian again. So when Jacob was a No-Show it was like the coffin was empty again. He was mad at Christian for not being there, again!

The two images Jack saw in Jacob's mirrors before it settled on his childhood home were the temple where Sun and Jin were married and the church James' parents' funeral.

I know I told you I would have all the numbers on the dial for you, but there is really no reason for me to retype it all when you can just go to this page on Lostpedia to read it. There are some numbers that don't match the numbers in the cave, but all of the important ones are the same. It could be a production error, an error in what we could read on our TV screens, or they were written incorrectly by whoever put them there (see theory on this below.)

Theories
One of the biggest debates raging among the fans is the identity of "Wallace." Jacob had told Hurley someone was coming to the island and, to help this person find it, Hurley had to turn the lighthouse wheel to 108. The name on 108 was "Wallace." Until now, no one on the show has had that name. There are several minor characters for whom we don't know a last name such as Ilana, Jack's ex-wife Sarah, Aaron's biological father Thomas, or Hurley's best friend from Mr. Cluck's Johnny. When you consider the possibility that anyone in the flash sideways could have a different name than the one we know, "Wallace" could be anyone. Some interesting suggestions I've heard are Desmond (because the island isn't finished with him), David (because that would really tick off Jack), Juliet, or Locke from the flashsideways (that seems like a stretch to me). I also read the suggestion that Jacob just wanted Jack to find himself and in so doing he would find the island's value.

There is a pretty good theory that the lighthouse dial is Jacob's list and the cave is Man In Locke's hit list. He lied to James. It does make sense. If Jacob had a nice clean list in the lighthouse, why would he need to have a 2nd list on the cave wall? Plus the numbers written in the cave don't seem to have a meaning. Until you see them on the dial. This leads me to believe the names and numbers on the dial are the original ones. The cave wall is someone's attempt to recreate the dial and that explains why some of them are wrong.

Namaste!
