Prior to watching this episode, I was very excited because of the title. Back in Season 2, Episode 9 we had "What Kate Did." After 32 episodes of watching Kate run from the law, we finally learned her original crime. She killed her abusive step-father because she learned he was actually her biological father. Interestingly, for awhile after it aired many people still debated that she must have done something else. It was finally settled when the producers said in an interview "We named the episode 'What Kate Did!'" This year at comic con the Lost producers showed us a clip which indicated that Kate didn't kill her father but an employee of his. This means her biological father Wayne was still out there. I have wondered if he would show up this season.
Connect The Dots
I am embarrassed to say I knew who the cab was about to run over while he was still "bottoms up." There is just no one better to play the bumbling idiot. Leslie Arzt was on the plane in last week's episode bugging Hurley. Before that he was the annoying science teacher on the island who blew himself up with dynamite. I've also learned that in "LA X" he was carrying a book about bugs. This is funny because he collected bugs on the island, including the spiders which killed Nikki and Paulo.
The Other who Kate forgot is named Aldo. Back in Season 3 ("Not in Portland") the Others were holding Karl captive and brainwashing him. Kate, Sawyer, and Alex broke him out by tricking the guard, Aldo. The best line was when Sawyer poked fun at Aldo for falling for the "Wookie prisoner trick."
Ethan is back! On the island his name was Ethan Rom which is an acronym for Other Man. He was the first Other to infiltrate the Losties beach camp. Charlie shot him for kidnapping Claire. Ethan was a surgeon. Last season we discovered that Ethan's parents were Horace and Amy Goodspeed. (Remember the funny moment when Juliet learned this and just about dropped baby Ethan?) We were never given an explanation for how he became an Other or why he had a name change. So it was good to hear him go by Dr. Goodspeed in this new storyline. It was ironic that he said "I don't want to stick you with needles if I don't have to." When he and the Others were holding Claire captive he stuck her with a lot of needles.Sawyer mentioned that Juliet had sat on the dock in the same place Kate was. He was referring to the first night they were in 1977. The Dharma people were allowing LeFleur and gang to stay on the island to look for the rest of their people but Juliet wanted to get on the sub. James found her sitting on the dock and begged her to stay for just "two weeks." Of course it turned out to be 3 years. I would like to point out that Josh Holloway did some amazing acting in tonight's scene on the dock. Those looked like genuine tears.
Just to be clear, when Dogen said "Because it happened to your sister." he was speaking of Claire. Jack and Claire have the same father, Christian Shepherd. Claire knows her father but never knew about Jack. Jack learned his relationship to Claire after he left the island. Her mother came to Christian's funeral and told Jack he had a sister who was on the same doomed flight. The last time we saw Claire (in this storyline) was when she followed Christian to Jacob's cabin.Easter Eggs and Details
Wasn't it funny when James told Kate "Don't come after me" then she immediately took a step forward? As if we didn't know she would follow him!
When Kate inspected Claire's bag she found a killer whale.
Check out this picture from "Something Nice Back Home." (S4 E10) It seems no matter who raises him, Aaron will receive a black and white whale.Hurley asked Sayid if he was a zombie. This is a little inside joke from the producers. For years they have joked that the final season would be "the zombie season."
The cops who visited Claire asked for 'Joan Hart' because that was the alias Kate signed in with. She has used this alias before in "Born to Run." (S1 E22) She went to a hotel and asked if they had any mail for Joan Hart.
It is interesting that Dogen described Sayid as "infected" when he wanted Jack to give him the pill. That was the same word Rousseau had used to describe the rest of her team.
Did the spinning baseball seem out of place? It is possibly a reference to The Numbers. There are 108 double stitches on a baseball.
The admitting nurse at the hospital was played by the same actress who played Aaron's nanny, Veronica in "Eggtown." Since that was in the other storyline, it is possible she is playing the same roll here.
James was not the first man in Lost to throw an engagement ring into water. Desmond also threw his ring into the River Thames in "Flashes Before Your Eyes." (S3 E8)
Questions
How was it that Sayid didn't pass the test? Lennon knew he had lied to Sayid. And even Sayid said "clearly I didn't pass." But during that uncomfortable scene he seemed to react the way anyone would. What could he have done differently?
Does James just plan to be a hermit now?
Namaste!

Hey did you notice that the two scenes with Kate getting into the taxi are different? What she says to the driver doesnt match. Just an obervation...bad editing maybe?
ReplyDeleteGood catch, I hadn't noticed that. My guess is it was bad editing. They couldn't do alternate storylines to the alternate storylines. That would get too crazy! Thanks for the comment.
ReplyDeletejust a quick note.... in "what Kate did", Kate actually helps Wayne get ready for bed and then blows up the house after he falls asleep. The house exploded as she was leaving on her motorcycle.
