Wow! What a night! It really is too bad you all can't come to my house to watch Lost. Here are the sugar cookies I served my guests tonight. That episode was amazing! As I sit to write this blog, I'm not even sure how to organize it. It was like we watched two separate shows. I'll use my usual format, but divide each section to represent the two storylines.
Connect The Dots for the Plane Storyline
I'm not going to pull out my Season 1 DVDs tonight or I really will be up all night. But off the top of my head here are the similarities between tonight's episode and the original Season 1 story:
Cindy the flight attendant gave Jack an extra bottle of alcohol. (Kate used it when she stitched up his side in the pilot episode.)
Jack and Rose had that same conversation about planes wanting to stay in the air.
Bernard was in the restroom when the flight went down.
Captain Seth Norris was the pilot.
Charlie was doing drugs in the bathroom.
There were several differences, of course:
Desmond was never on flight 815
Hurley was not a lucky person.

It seems Locke was lying to Boone about being on a walkabout since he turned out to be still in the wheelchair. But their conversation had some ironic lines. Boone asked if Locke was "pulling his leg." In Season 1 Jack almost amputated Boone's leg. Boone also told Locke "If this plane goes down, I'm sticking with you." Which is what led to Boone's death in the original storyline.
Other ironic lines:
Rose told Jack "You can let go now." after the turbulence.
Charlie told Jack "I was supposed to die."
Connect The Dots for the On-Island Storyline
We learned that Jack & company landed in 2007. Jacob told Hurley he "died an hour ago." When Jacob died, the Ajira flight had landed about 2 days before in 2007. That means Jacob's final words, "They're coming" probably referred to Jack & company.
When the group went down under the wall, they came across Montand's body. He was with the French team. He lost his arm when Smokey pulled him down there.
Details and Easter Eggs for Plane Storyline
When the camera went underwater, we saw the sonic fence, Dharmaville houses and swing set, a Dharma-branded shark, and the four-toed statue in it's broken state.
The guy bothering Hurley on the plane was Dr. Arzt. The professor who blew himself up when they first found the dynamite at the Black Rock. He was also the one who collected the medusa spiders which lead to Nikki and Paulo's demise.
Dr. Arzt was asking Hurley to quote a catch phrase from his Mr. Cluck's commercials. The producers showed us this commercial at comic con. You can watch it again here.
Desmond would have seemed familiar to Jack because they once met while running in a stadium.
Did you see Frogurt sleeping next to Locke? He was the annoying guy who was shot with a flaming arrow in Season 5. We also saw him later in this episode telling Kate to get in the taxi line.
Sawyer called the flight attendant "Earhart" as in Amelia Earhart. Ha ha! I love the old Sawyer!
When Jack saved Charlie's life Charlie replied "Terrific." That is the same word he said in the pilot episode after the Smoke Monster first crunched through the trees.
When Kate hit the marshall's head on the bathroom counter it gave him a head wound similar to the wound he got during the crash of the original storyline. When the cabin lost pressure, a suitcase fell out of the overhead compartment and hit him on the forehead.
Details and Easter Eggs for On-Island Storyline
I'd like to point out how cool it was when Kate woke up and we could hear how her ears were ringing. It seems to me that Juliet's body should have been waaaay farther down in the hole.
When Sawyer was digging down to Juliet we saw Desmond's old exercise bike.
Don't miss the connection between the whispers being heard right before the Others grabbed Kate and Jack.
Jack performing CPR on Sayid while Kate told him "He's dead" was reminiscent of Jack performing CPR on Charlie back in Season 1. Kate was a little more worked up over Charlie's death though.
We had another appearance of Zach and Emma, the two kids who were in the tail section of flight 815. They've grown a lot since we last saw them, but that's ok since it is three years later in the storyline.
"Un-Locke" described real Locke as a man who was "irreparably broken." Yet, at the end of the episode, in the other storyline, Jack told Locke "Nothing is irreversible."
The skinny Other wanted to talk to Jack privately. The episode ended before we learned what it was about. But, to me, it seemed like a parallel to how the airlines needed to speak with Jack about his missing father. Maybe the Others need to speak to him about is not-so-missing father.
Did you notice that when Sayid sat up, Hurley and the Losties were not the only ones surprised? Skinny Other said "Oh my god!" Was he not expecting that to happen?
My Questions
So glad Ben asked one of my questions "Why didn't Jacob fight back?" I have wondered that since last May. I hope it's because Jacob has a plan.
Did Juliet's mind travel in time? When she first looked around she said "It didn't work, we're still on the island." But later, with Miles' interpretation, she said "It worked." So how did she know?
Am I the only one who is nervous that Hurley is wearing a red shirt? Juliet's red shirt was a bad omen.
Is is possible Sun doesn't know english in the new storyline? I know she would have the motive to see Jin locked up. But it seemed like she really didn't understand what the security officer was asking her. Maybe her past has been altered.
Well, that's all I can give you tonight. I will do my usual online research and post again in a few days.
Namaste!

You may not have missed it, but you didn't comment on it. Another difference on the "new 815" other than Desmond being there (and then disappearing?) was that it looks like Shannon wasn't on the plane unless I missed something. I'm quite intrigued by where this is all going. :-)

Shannon had the sole first class seat, so she wouldn't have been sitting next to Boone.
ReplyDeleteA few things I noticed: The conversation between Rose and Jack was reversed compared to the first season, plus Jack had a quip about the free booze "of course breaks some critical FAA regulations." ALSO, the stewardess gave Jack only 1 bottle of booze in this new timeline (because they don't crash so he doesn't need a second).
I found it satisfying that the smoke monster was the man in black. I'm also wondering if, since Jacob never spoke to Ben, the man in black has been "leading" them through Richard, without Richard knowing. Also, I loved the un-Locke line given to Richard "Hello Richard, it's good to see you out of those chains." I'm postulating that Richard came to the island on the Black Rock (which was a slave ship) and Richard was a slave on it. He met Jacob and the man in black then, chose the side of good with Jacob, and has been using the fountain of youth to stay young.
I'm not wondering about the Rousseau timeline. If the temple turned the people "sick", was that really them joining the main in black? Or were they actually infected somehow by the smoke?
As for Juliet's body being so shallow, remember that they flashed to the present, and in the present, that's the hatch location, which was only a rope climb down.
I liked that Jack kept trying to save Sayid, it means he's turning back into his leader self, rather than the wussy version of himself in a Dharma jumpsuit where he just lets things slide.
I think the skinny Other was surprised, because the island doesn't bring people back to life, it only heals them. Richard alluded to this when he was talking with Ben when they were first confronted with Locke being brought back to life.
And I think Sun knows English still. She looked like she knew what the guy was talking about when he was questioning Jin.
We loved the episode, it was great. Can't wait for next week!
ReplyDeleteThanks Graham and Aaron. You guys brought up the stuff I missed. Most of them hit me today. But writing a blog for this episode was a lot like nailing Jello to the wall. I could've gone on and on about the similarities and differences until dawn.
ReplyDeleteAaron, good point about Rousseau. The things we are learning are bound to explain weird things we've seen before. It will probably happen all season. There may not have been anything wrong with them. But I guess the Others didn't like Montand enough to fix him!
Aaron is right. The island hasn't *really* brought anyone back to life. I'm wondering if Jacob is inhabiting Sayid's body the way the man in black is Locke's. Especially given that the water wasn't clear (remember "why isn't the water clear?!?"), I don't think Sayid was healed as himself.
