Jack: Why are you telling me this?
Sayid: Because it's gonna be you, Jack.
Well tonight I'll have to type between sniffs and try not to get tears on my keyboard. OH....MY.....GOSH! I can't believe we lost so many main characters in one episode! We need more than a moment of silence, we need a mini-memorial service.
RIP Jin and SunI did not know I was so invested in Jin and Sun until he said "I'm not leaving you." He told her the same thing when they were reunited on the beach. And it did not help that the whole scene had shades of
Titanic in it - that's a whole reservoir of emotions. The writers have been tricky, getting us to argue about which one of them will live to the end. We never considered they both would die! Poor Ji Yeon!
RIP SayidIt may not have been much of a surprise that Sayid didn't survive to the end. As James pointed out earlier in the season, he was a torturer, why should he get to live. But it was nice to see that he redeemed himself with his death. It makes me wonder if something Desmond said woke him from his zombie-state. He was more helpful to the group after that encounter. And I'm so happy to have a confirmation that he didn't kill Desmond.
RIP FrankI know this is probably news to some of you: Frank Lapidis died in this episode too. He was hit by the sub door and never swam to the surface. We will miss his great one-liners!
Connect The Dots
The dentist Jack went to visit was Bernard, Rose's husband. It was funny when he accused Jack of flirting with Rose on the plane.
Sideways John was saying some interesting things in his sleep. First he said "Push the button." This obviously refers to the button in the Swan Station, the source of John and Jack's first disagreement. Next he said "I wish you had believed me." This refers to John's last message to Jack, the suicide note.

Jack and Claire's conversion was brought to you by Apollo Bar the official candy bar of Lost. He got it from the vending machine, just like he did the day Jacob touched him. ("The Incident")
Claire's jewelry box played "Catch A Falling Star." That was probably why Christian wanted her to have it. It was the song he sang to her as a baby.
Details and Easter Eggs
This episode did not start with the "Previously on Lost" flashes. I guess they figured if we didn't know what happened before we shouldn't be watching. But I actually was a little confused when Jack woke up in the canoe. Good thing Sayid was there to welcome us all to Hydra Island.
Here's a few random details about the Sideways world: Claire and Jack looked in a mirror together. Except for John talking in his sleep, no one had total recall of the island. No one came in contact with Desmond but many paths crossed. Jack recited to Locke the Season 5 theme: "whatever happened, happened."
The same music played while Sun and Jin drowned that played when Charlie drowned.
Irony
When Kate asked Jack why he rescued them, he said "I'm with him" indicating the Smoke. In the last episode ("The Last Recruit") Claire and UnLocke both told Jack he was with "him."
The original John Locke blew up the Others' sub with C4. Widmore's first ship, the Kahana, was blown up with C4. Now UnLocke blew up Widmore's sub with C4.
On the island, Locke wants to kill Jack, because he is a candidate. In the Sideways World Jack wants to save Locke, because he is a candidate.
Questions
Why didn't UnLocke turn into Smokey at the dock and kill all the shooters like he did outside the cages?
What was James' plan when he told Jack to get UnLocke in the water? Did he think he would melt like the Wicked Witch of the West?
If UnLocke has been stuck on the island for centuries and hates technology, how does he know how to identify a bomb and rewire it?
Did the actor who plays Anthony Cooper (Kevin Tighe) really get flown to Hawaii and paid just to drool?
Namaste!

Couple thoughts:
ReplyDeleteThe way Jack got the candy bar from the vending machine and offered it to Claire mirrors the way Jacob got the candy bar and offered it to Jack. Remember, Jack's candy bar got stuck and Jacob actually got two bars.
Seperately, we've never seen the transition between UnLocke and Smokey. I'm not suggesting they aren't the same, but it couples with your question about why UnLocke didn't turn into Smokey at the dock.
Nate, I've been thinking more about UnLocke at the dock and I'm wondering if there is some sort of connection with him being wet. James may have some sort of theory on that too because one time he asked UnLocke why he didn't just turn into the smoke to fly to Hydra island and then he told Jack to get him in the water. Maybe he can't change while he's wet. That may explain why Jacob "baptized" Richard when they first met. And it may be connected to why it rains when bad things are about to happen on the island. I could be way off base but it's just a thought.
